Cot safety

  1. Cot should be positioned away from curtains and blind cords
  2. Keep cot away from power points, heaters, lights and electricial appliances
  3. Place mobiles and toys well out of reach
  4. Fixed base cots should be at least 60cm depth
    Low base position cots should be at least 60cm depth
    High base position cots should be at least 40cm depth
  5. Cots should have locking wheels
  6. The space between the cots bars should be between 5cm and 9.5cm
  7. The cot should have a snug fitting mattress

Do not use:

  • pillows
  • doonas
  • loose bedding
  • bumpers
  • soft toys
  • lambswool

These can suffocate or choke your baby, or can be used to climb out of the cot.

In Australia, all new and second-hand cots must comply with Australian Product Safety Standards, based on the Australian and New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 2172:2003.
