Signs of sepsis

If your child has any one of the following symptoms, it could be a sign of sepsis:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Rash that doesn’t fade when pressed
  • Unexplained pain
  • Restlessness or confused
  • Difficult to wake up
  • Seizures
  • Vomiting
  • Skin is blotchy, pale or cold

For babies:

  • Less wet nappies
  • Problems feeding
  • Not settling

Sepsis has many different symptoms that are often similar to a mild infection. See a health professional if your child's symptoms aren't getting better or get worse.

If your child has an infection and you are worried that they are becoming more unwell, see your doctor urgently, or go to your nearest hospital emergency department or call triple zero (000).
