Glycemic Index Foundation

The Glycemic Index Foundation (GIF) is a not-for-profit health promotion charity supported by The University of Sydney and Diabetes Australia.

Vision and mission

The Glycemic Index Foundation is the independent authority on the nutrition and health benefits of Glycemic Index. They help people lead a healthier life through the adoption of evidence-based low Gi eating principles for better health.

How the Glycemic Index Foundation (GIF) can help

GIF do this by educating consumers and healthcare professionals about the benefits of a healthy low GI diet in the prevention and control of life-style related chronic diseases. This includes facilitating the management of diabetes, weight loss and weight loss maintenance and reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, diabetes complications and other chronic lifestyle diseases.

As a not-for profit health promotion charity, GIF direct surplus funds into community awareness and education about the health benefits of healthy low GI diets, in research and development to make lower GI carbohydrates available in each food category as well as ongoing scientific research to build knowledge and understanding of the health benefits of GI.

To make healthy choices easier GIF developed the GI Symbol Program. The GI Symbol is their tool for quickly and reliably making healthy food choices when grocery shopping. It's GIF's guarantee to consumers that the GI value stated near the nutrition information label is accurate and that the food meets strict nutritional criteria that are consistent with international dietary guidelines.
